Muna Gurung started it, selling handmade things from Nepal at weekend markets while working weekdays as a housekeeper and babysitter, the shop's history says. When COVID hit, their father told her, "You need someone to help you grow online, and your sister is right there." That was Devi.
The shop is Karma Nepal Crafts, named, its site says, after their mother. That is the West Village's bias: things made by hand, or worn before, by someone you can name. 6 of the 8 shops sell one or the other, and the day to go is Tuesday, when Leffot puts out its used shoes.

West 14th Street and Greenwich Avenue
Start at Screaming Mimi's, on the parlor floor of 240 West 14th Street. It has sold vintage and costume in New York since 1978, by its own account, for the moment you need "to make an entrance, or to stop a heart."
Beige pinstripe leather pants from Tom Ford's Gucci, 1999, are $1,495, and film, TV and theater productions shop there too.
At 106 Greenwich Avenue, Odin New York sells new menswear: Howlin', Escuyer and Craighill beside its own line and fragrance. Its site shows a Puma collaboration photographed at Coney Island.
"By 13, I was already working with enamel and silver mosaics," writes Ketevan, the fourth generation goldsmith behind Mottive Jewelry at 33 Greenwich Avenue. Mottive started in her grandfather's cellar workshop in Tbilisi, Georgia.
She recently learned her great grandfather was a blacksmith, "so I guess working with metal does run deep in the family." Her pieces are made by hand in Brooklyn from recycled silver and sold beside vintage finds. Silver Acadia huggie earrings are $55, and the shop resizes rings and engraves.
Christopher Street, for the shoes and the suit
Greenwich Avenue meets Christopher Street at what the activist Richard Leitsch called "The Corner" in his 1969 account. After a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, at 51 and 53 Christopher Street, on 28 June, the protest's focus shifted there. Thousands filled the street every night for almost a week, the National Park Service says.
Leffot opened at 10 Christopher Street in May 2008 under a Latin motto, Numquam Jactate: never boast, by its own translation. It leaves that to the Aldens.
Its V Tip blucher, made by Alden for the shop, comes in water resistant reverse tobacco chamois on commando soles, at $762.
Tuesday is for used pairs, bought from customers, inspected and sold online and in the store. An Alden chukka was $465, down from $756, and Corthay Bellas $720, down from $2,500. Corthay brings a trunk show on Thursday 1 and Friday 2 October, for anyone who wants theirs new.
The Mayfair suit at J. Mueser, 19 Christopher Street, takes more than 80 hours, bench made in New York from a hand drafted pattern, the shop says. It opened in 2008 too, a minute from Leffot, and opens daily at noon.
Its Waverly suit, made by hand in Naples with an unpadded shoulder, is $2,150 in the high twist wool the shop carries all year as its house fabric. Ask to see the Mayfair, even if you leave in the Waverly.

Bleecker Street and West 4th Street, handmade and secondhand
At 266 Bleecker Street, Karma Nepal Crafts sells clothes made by women artisans in Nepal and India. Felt Christmas ornaments are already out, at $15.
Hamlet's Vintage began in 2007 as a booth at trade shows and flea markets, its site says. It announces a move to 161 West 4th Street and opens noon to 8 pm daily.
Pick your decade: a 1960s Valentino tuxedo is $899 online, or about fifteen 1970s Hawaiian shirts at $59.
West 8th Street, for the designer racks
An Undercover shirt with a Cindy Sherman print is $795 at Atelier New York, with men's at 20 West 8th Street and women's at 29. It is the walk's one big designer list: Rick Owens, Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto and Ann Demeulemeester. No hours are posted, so call ahead.
When to go, and getting there
Of the 7 shops with posted hours, only Leffot closes, on Sunday and Monday. On Sunday, Screaming Mimi's opens at 1 pm, so the other six overlap from 1 pm to 6 pm.
Karma Nepal Crafts and Hamlet's Vintage stay open until 8 pm every day, and Screaming Mimi's six days a week. Take the 1 train to Christopher Street and walk up to West 14th to start.
The walk takes 27 minutes. A Mayfair suit takes more than 80 hours, and the silver on Greenwich Avenue took four generations.
