We count 15 independent menswear stores in New York City, and seven will fit, hem or repair what they sell.
New York Fashion Week ended this month, and one of the 15 graded it. Gen and Elliot of Standard & Strange, the denim and boot shop on Mulberry Street, reviewed a few menswear shows on the shop's blog. They gave what they saw a B.
Our rule for men's clothes in this city is to buy where they will alter it. Suits and jeans come in standard sizes. Bodies do not.

Made for you, or made to fit
The Armoury, 168 Duane Street in Tribeca, was founded in Hong Kong in 2010 by Mark Cho and Alan See. Its trunk shows bring tailors and shoemakers in to take orders in person. It is 4.8 on Google from 90 reviews, read 20 September 2026, and it has a second shop on the Upper East Side.
J. Mueser, 19 Christopher Street, opened in 2008 and makes a bespoke suit by hand in its studio in eight to nine weeks. Its top grade Mayfair suit takes more than 80 hours of work, and ready to wear Waverly suits start at $1,560.
Stòffa, 125 Grand Street, makes its own coats, trousers, knitwear and ties in limited runs, and its site says it puts made to measure first.
Three suits for $299, outside Manhattan
The cheapest suits come by the bundle in Queens and on Staten Island. Karako Suits of Howard Beach, 155-12 Cross Bay Boulevard, has sold suits since 1982 and advertises three for $299. Staff come up in 417 of its 857 reviews.
New York Man Suits, 2670 Hylan Boulevard on Staten Island, has sold suits since 1988. Three Italian suits are $399, alterations in the store are free, and a groom with five groomsmen gets his own suit free.
In Jackson Heights, Franky Fashion, 94-17 Roosevelt Avenue, was opened by Frank Rafalian in April 1989. It sells suits and boots, 10 am to 8 pm every day.
Two Brooklyn shops close early on Friday and all day Saturday, then open on Sunday. The Hat Box, 1837 Coney Island Avenue in Midwood, sells suits, shirts and hats for men and boys, Bar Mitzvah clothes among them. The shirtsleeve in bp, 5513 13th Avenue in Borough Park, is 4.8 on Google from 339 reviews.
Japanese denim and workwear
Blue in Green has sold Japanese denim at 8 Greene Street since 2006, including Pure Blue Japan, Samurai and orSlow. Its denim guide defines selvedge as the woven edge of cloth from a shuttle loom, and the shop hems jeans on a chainstitch machine. Pure Blue Japan's XX-019, a 14oz jean in a version made only for the shop, is $489.
Standard & Strange, 238 Mulberry Street, opened in Oakland in 2012 and sells denim, boots and leather from Japan, the US and Europe, with repairs and alterations. Boots come up in 23 of its 136 reviews, and "own fewer, better things" is its motto. (The Real McCoy's C-1 vest, modeled on a Second World War pilot's survival vest, has 16 pockets and costs $890.)
The Brooklyn Circus, 361 Canal Street, makes its own varsity jackets and denim and, its site says, takes its ideas from history books. It is 5.0 on Google from 13 reviews.

Designer labels, from Bond Street to Court Street
C'H'C'M' opened at 2 Bond Street in NoHo in 2010, two years after it began selling online. It carries Margaret Howell, PAA and Evan Kinori beside its own line, made in five countries.
Odin New York, 106 Greenwich Avenue, calls itself a menswear boutique and lifestyle brand, and its site shows a collaboration with Puma. In Brooklyn, Ven.Space, 369 Court Street in Carroll Gardens, opens noon to 6 every day, and 20 of its 62 reviews praise the staff.
Shoes on Christopher Street
Leffot, 10 Christopher Street, has sold Alden, Edward Green and Gaziano & Girling since May 2008, under the motto Numquam Jactate, or Never Boast. Used pairs from the same makers go on sale every Tuesday, and Corthay holds a trunk show there on 1 and 2 October.
When to go
Saturday suits Manhattan: all nine of the Manhattan shops here open that day. Avoid Monday, when Leffot, Stòffa and The Brooklyn Circus close, and Leffot shuts on Sunday too.
