We count 22 independent jewelry stores in New York City, and the best old pieces are sold upstairs, by appointment.
Verdura opened on Fifth Avenue on 1 September 1939, the day war broke out in Europe. Cole Porter and Vincent Astor paid for it, says the jeweler's own history.
Our advice: buy old. Half of the 22 deal mainly in antique, estate or vintage jewelry. Pippin argues on its site that old pieces carry "more handwork" and outlast new ones.

Upstairs on Fifth Avenue
A La Vieille Russie is on the fourth floor of 745 Fifth Avenue, selling Fabergé, 18th century gold snuff boxes and antique jewelry. Verdura is in Suite 1205 of the same building, and its gift page is titled Gifts Under $20,000.
Aaron Faber Gallery, open since 1974, sells by appointment from the 11th floor of 589 Fifth Avenue. It shows more than 50 contemporary designers beside vintage Rolex watches.
Kentshire, in Suite 800 at 608 Fifth Avenue, began in 1940 as a silver dealer and has kept a salon on the seventh floor of Bergdorf Goodman since 1988.
Park and Madison, for collectors
Macklowe Gallery opened in 1970 in 420 square feet and now fills 6,000 square feet at 445 Park Avenue with Art Nouveau furniture, Tiffany lamps and jewelry. James Robinson Inc., founded in 1912, sells 19th century and Art Deco jewelry at 480 Park Avenue, Tuesday to Thursday only.
On Madison, Fred Leighton at number 773 sells signed vintage, with Belperron and David Webb originals on its site. Camilla Dietz Bergeron Ltd., at 818, sells estate pieces by appointment. FD Gallery sells Cartier and JAR from a townhouse at 26 East 80th Street, Monday to Thursday.
Vintage from $4
Pippin Vintage Jewelry, 104 West 17th Street, sells $4 charms and diamond engagement rings, and prices its fine jewelry at or below wholesale value. (The shop is named after the owners' dog, who was named after a hobbit.)
OLD JEWELRY STORE sells modernist and brutalist pieces from unit 227 at 75 East Broadway, under the Manhattan Bridge, and a brutalist ring was $185 on its site.
Doyle & Doyle, 41 Union Square West, was started by two sisters, and a gemologist and a jewelry historian research each piece. It is 4.9 on Google from 223 reviews, read 20 September 2026.
Erie Basin, 388 Van Brunt Street in Red Hook, is largely a one man shop. Russell Whitmore has run it since 2006 and designs its EB line, made in New York. The next walk in Saturday is 10 October, noon to 5.
Love Adorned, 269 Elizabeth Street in Nolita, mixes vintage and one of a kind jewelry with home goods, noon to 7 daily.

New gold and its makers
For an engagement ring, Greenwich St. Jewelers, 93 Reade Street in Tribeca, has the most evidence: 275 of its 947 reviews mention engagement rings. It stocks rings by Single Stone, WWAKE and Marla Aaron.
In Astoria, Treasured & Co., 30-06 Steinway Street, has made rings in solid 14K and 18K gold since 1989, first as Alex's Jewelry.
Mottive Jewelry, 33 Greenwich Avenue, is run by Ketevan, a fourth generation goldsmith who began in her grandfather's cellar workshop in Tbilisi. At 5.0 on Google from 299 reviews, it is the best rated shop here with more than 100.
Ted Muehling, 104 Franklin Street, has designed jewelry in pearl, horn, wood and stone since 1976. His calcite drop earrings with 18k gold tops were $3,000 on his site.
Silver, charms and resale
avntgrdny, 131 Eldridge Street, buys, sells and consigns Chrome Hearts, much of it .925 sterling silver. The brand comes up in 128 of its 1,165 reviews.
At cutandcropped, 192 Spring Street, you build an Italian charm bracelet in the shop. Mure and Grand, 170 Mulberry Street, sells its own jewelry, sunglasses and bags.
myGemma, Suite 704 at 270 Madison Avenue, buys and sells used designer jewelry and bags by appointment. Fast payment comes up in 64 of its reviews.
When to go
Go uptown on a weekday, and save Saturday for Chelsea and downtown, where Pippin, OLD JEWELRY STORE, Love Adorned and cutandcropped all open.
Call ahead where appointments are asked for; avntgrdny's 47th Street branch requires photo ID, its site says.
