About NYC Boutiques
NYC Boutiques is an independent guide to the independent clothing shops of New York City, edited by Lucas Bruno. It lists 141 shops in 32 neighborhoods, each with the day its address was checked.
How a shop gets on the list
Every shop here was checked against Google: the address had to match a real place, and the place had to be open for business on the day it was checked. Each shop page prints that day. The checks for this edition ran from 27 August 2026 to 24 September 2026.
Opening hours, Google ratings and the topics reviewers mention were read from each shop's Google listing on 20 September 2026, and every page prints that date beside them. Ratings stay Google's: they are printed as dated text, never presented as reviews of our own.
No shop pays to be listed, and no shop can pay to move up a list.
What we leave out
- Chain stores and brand outlets, even when they sell clothes. This edition leaves out 19 of them.
- A second branch written into an address that nobody checked.
- Opening hours that make no sense on Google, such as a clothing shop listed as open around the clock.
- Review text. The rating, the count and the topics are facts; a single review is one person's afternoon.
How neighborhoods are named
By ZIP code, one name per ZIP, from the New York City health department's list of ZIP code neighborhoods. Where a ZIP takes in several neighborhoods it carries its best known name: SoHo on this site means 10012 and 10013, which also take in Nolita, NoHo, Little Italy and the top of Tribeca. Where no single name fits, as in Brooklyn's 11201, the shop is filed under its borough. The walking order on each neighborhood page is set by hand from the street addresses.

Lucas Bruno edits NYC Boutiques and its journal. The articles are built on the shop data on this site (names, addresses, hours and ratings, each with the day it was read), and any other source is named in the text.
