Upper East Side shopping: 9 boutiques on and off Madison
Designer resale on the Upper East Side goes back to 1954, and two of its shops publish exactly when a price drops.
Upper East Side shopping is best secondhand: 7 of our 9 independent shops sell designer resale or estate jewelry. Jackie Onassis's jewels have been through one of them.
That one is Fred Leighton, on Madison at 63rd Street, which also names Josephine Baker and Diana Vreeland among the owners whose jewels it has sold. Its site opens on a Bulgari bracelet from the 1950s, cabochon emeralds and diamonds set in 18k gold.
Go early, and skip the markdown. Two of these shops cut a price by 20% after 30 days and by half after 60, but Michael's says most of its pieces sell in their first four weeks.

Estate jewelry, from 63rd to 80th Street
Fred Leighton sold clothes in Greenwich Village in the 1960s, its site says, then moved uptown to sell old jewels whole. Until the 1970s, it adds, period pieces were often broken up for their stones.
The Madison Avenue BID lists it at 713 Madison, open 10:30 am to 6 pm, Monday to Saturday. Its own site still gives 773 Madison, the Kwiat boutique, and marks 713 as opening in spring 2026. Call first.
Five blocks up, Camilla Dietz Bergeron sells estate jewelry at 818 Madison by appointment, 9:30 am to 5 pm. Camilla Bergeron, who died in 2018, founded it with Gus Davis, then of Sotheby's jewelry division. "Chic isn't some kind of formula; chic just is," she once said, and the shop keeps the line on its site.
FD Gallery sells from a townhouse at 26 East 80th Street, just off Madison, Monday to Thursday, 11 am to 4 pm. Fiona Druckenmiller, its founder, gives Cartier of every period a central case of its own, Tutti Frutti and Panther pieces included, and sells photographs by Avedon and Man Ray. Among the newest arrivals: Cartier pearl and diamond ear clips, $8,800.
Designer resale for women
Designer resale here goes back to 1954. La Boutique Resale says its space at 1132 Madison was once home to Encore, which it calls America's first designer consignment store, founded that year by Florence Barry.
At 1125 Madison, Michael's, The Consignment Shop for Women also dates itself to 1954. The third generation of one family runs it, and moved it down to street level in 2018.
Its rules are strict: clothes no more than two years old (Chanel, Hermès and Pucci can be any age), in sizes 0 to 14. Skip Mondays, since its site gives Tuesday to Saturday, 11 am to 6 pm.
La Boutique itself opened on Madison in 1994 and has the second and third floors of 1132. Stock arrives daily, from gently worn to new with tags, and the deeper discounts and vintage are on the second floor. Gowns are what its reviewers mention most.
East on 81st Street, between First and Second Avenues, Designer Revival at number 324 opens every day, 11 am to 6 pm. Tiffany Keriakos bought the old Designer Resale in 2015 and renamed it. The shop's site names the vintage that turns up: Pucci prints, Miyake pleats from 1988 to 1995, and Galliano's Dior with its newspaper prints.
At 60 days the price is cut in half, if the piece is still there.
Menswear, consigned and new
Next door to Designer Revival, at 322 East 81st Street, Gentlemen's Resale has sold men's consignment since 1992, by its own account. It opens at noon every day. Unsold pieces drop 20% after 30 days and 50% after 60.
Around the corner from Camilla Dietz Bergeron, The Armoury has its uptown shop at 13 East 69th Street, open 10 am to 6 pm, and from noon on Sundays. Mark Cho and Alan See founded it in Hong Kong in 2010, and its New York shops bring in tailors and shoemakers for trunk shows.
A present in Carnegie Hill
End at Blue Tree, 1285 Madison Avenue, seven blocks past La Boutique. Phoebe Cates Kline opened it in the fall of 2005, wanting "a general store but according to me," its site says.
Clothes and jewelry share the floor with candles and delicacies.
When to go, and how to get there
Go Tuesday to Thursday, when all 9 are open at once from noon to 4 pm, if you book Camilla Dietz Bergeron. Sunday is thinner. Five of the 9 open, and none of the jewelers.
Do the jewelers first. FD Gallery closes at 4 pm, and on Fridays and weekends, while every resale shop here stays open until at least 6.
Start at the F stop at Lexington and 63rd Street, two blocks from Fred Leighton, as the Madison Avenue BID's visitor page suggests. Late September is a good time to go: Michael's takes consigned sweaters and winter coats from September, and boots from October.

Madison Avenue, where the Madison Avenue BID counts over 800 businesses from 57th to 86th Street. For independents, add East 81st Street between First and Second Avenues, and start resale at 84th and Madison.
Is Madison Avenue expensive?
It can be: a David Webb emerald ring was $32,500 on Camilla Dietz Bergeron's site. Resale costs less, and "look like a million without spending a million" is Michael's own promise.
What bus goes up Madison Avenue?
The M1, M2, M3 and M4 all run uptown on Madison, the Madison Avenue BID says. The crosstown M72, M79 and M86 stop at Madison too.
